History of Puthu Mandapam
Puthu Mandapam was constructed in 1635 CE by King Tirumalai Nayak, ruler of the Madurai Nayak dynasty. It was built as a large pillared hall (mandapam) to serve pilgrims and for temple-related functions associated with the Meenakshi Amman Temple. The structure exemplifies Nayak architecture with its sculpted pillars and was later converted into a commercial market while retaining its heritage character.
Culture & Context
The mandapam is culturally significant as an extension of the Meenakshi Temple complex and a showcase of Tamil Nayak sculpture and craftsmanship. It reflects the temple-town culture of Madurai and continues to serve as a traditional marketplace for textiles and books, maintaining its role as a community and visitor hub in the historic city centre.
