About Potholes of Nighoj
The Potholes of Nighoj are a significant geological formation located on the bedrock of the Kukadi River in Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra. Formed over millennia by river-transported pebbles swirling in basalt rock cracks, these natural circular cavities create a 3 km long ravine with depths exceeding 100 feet. The site is considered among Asia's largest naturally formed river potholes and serves as both a scientific study area for fluvial erosion and a cultural landmark associated with the local Malganga deity.
Visitors guide
Visitors can explore a 3 km stretch of basalt riverbed featuring hundreds of naturally formed circular potholes ranging from small depressions to large deep cavities. A suspension bridge connects two temples on opposite banks, offering aerial views of the gorge. Concrete walkways provide vantage points along one side of the ravine. During summer months when water levels are low, the intricate rock formations are fully exposed and accessible for close examination. The site includes the Malganga Temple complex and basic viewing infrastructure.

History of Potholes of Nighoj
The potholes represent thousands of years of continuous fluvial erosion processes in basalt terrain, providing geological evidence of historical high rainfall patterns and river dynamics in the Deccan region.
Culture & Context
Local community regards the formations as manifestations of Goddess Malganga's blessings; the adjacent Malganga Temple is an active religious site where annual Ghagar Miravnuk procession occurs typically in April.
