History of Ponnani Lighthouse
The present Ponnani Lighthouse was commissioned on 17 April 1983 as a 30-metre reinforced concrete tower with modern optical equipment, replacing earlier navigational aids for the historic Ponnani Port. Ponnani was one of the oldest ports on the Malabar Coast and an important trading centre, and the lighthouse continues to provide navigational guidance for vessels along this stretch of the Arabian Sea under the Cochin Directorate of Lighthouses and Lightships.
Culture & Context
The lighthouse is a prominent coastal landmark for the fishing community and port town of Ponnani, marking the confluence of the Bharathapuzha River and the Arabian Sea near Ponnani Beach, an area associated with the town's maritime heritage.
