History of Point Peron
Point Peron was developed as a coastal defence site during World War II. The Peron Battery, also known as K Battery, was constructed in 1942-1943 as part of the Fremantle Fortress coastal defence system to protect Cockburn Sound and Fremantle Harbour. It included 155mm guns, observation posts, magazines and barracks. The battery was operational until 1945 and remains one of the best-preserved examples of World War II coastal defences in Western Australia.
Culture & Context
The area lies on Noongar country and is valued for its natural coastal landscape and recreational use. The reserve is recognised for its combination of natural coastal environment and preserved military heritage, and is managed as a conservation and recreation reserve within the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park surrounds.
