About Phu Khiao Wildlife Sanctuary
Phu Khiao Wildlife Sanctuary is a large protected forest area in Phu Khiao District, Chaiyaphum Province, northeastern Thailand. Covering about 1,560 square kilometers on the Phu Khiao mountain range, it is one of Thailand's largest and most intact wildlife sanctuaries. Established in 1972 and managed by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, it protects dry evergreen, mixed deciduous and pine forests, grasslands such as Thung Kamang, and diverse wildlife including elephants, gibbons and hornbills.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a remote, strictly protected forest landscape centered on the open grassland of Thung Kamang. Access is restricted and requires advance permission from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation and accompaniment by rangers. The sanctuary offers forested mountains, pine stands, streams and meadows for guided nature walks, wildlife and birdwatching, photography and camping at the designated Thung Kamang area. There are ranger stations and a nature study center but no commercial tourism infrastructure.
