History of Phillaur Fort
The site originally held a serai built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Shuja. In 1809, Maharaja Ranjit Singh had it rebuilt as a fort under his general Dewan Mohkam Chand with assistance from French and Italian generals to serve as a frontier outpost against British forces across the Sutlej River. After the Anglo-Sikh wars, the British took control of the fort and used it as a military cantonment and later as a police training centre.
Culture & Context
The fort represents Sikh military architecture and the strategic importance of the Sutlej frontier during the Sikh Empire. It is associated with Maharaja Ranjit Singh's reign and is now preserved as the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Police Academy, reflecting its continued institutional role and heritage value in Punjab.
