History of Perhentian Islands
The name Perhentian means 'stopping point' in Malay, as the islands historically served as a stopover for traders and fishermen sailing in the South China Sea. Traditionally inhabited by fishing communities, the islands later became part of the Pulau Redang National Marine Park for conservation.
Culture & Context
The islands reflect traditional east coast Malay fishing culture, with small fishing villages and a predominantly Malay Muslim community. Local livelihoods are linked to fishing and tourism, and island life remains relatively simple and community-based.
