History of People's Park Complex
Completed in 1973 after construction from 1970, People's Park Complex was developed by the People's Park Development under Singapore's urban renewal programme. Designed by Design Partnership (now DP Architects) led by Tay Kheng Soon with Koh Seow Chuan and others, it was one of Singapore's first modern shopping centres and mixed-use developments, introducing a podium-tower typology, atrium and Brutalist design that influenced subsequent commercial architecture.
Culture & Context
The complex is a longstanding commercial and social hub for Chinatown, serving local residents and visitors with affordable shopping and food. It reflects the transformation of the former People's Park area and remains a recognizable landmark of 1970s architecture and community commerce in Outram.
