History of Pelabuhan Ratu Beach
Palabuhanratu developed as a fishing port and coastal town on the south coast of West Java during the Dutch colonial period and grew as a regional fishing center. The Samudra Beach Hotel, inaugurated in 1966 under President Sukarno, is a historic landmark that marked early state-led tourism development on the Indian Ocean coast.
Culture & Context
The beach is culturally associated with the local legend of Nyai Roro Kidul, the Queen of the Southern Sea, who is traditionally believed to guard the south coast of Java. The legend is reflected in local customs, an annual sea offering ceremony (Larung Sesaji), and the Samudra Beach Hotel's Room 308 which is culturally reserved in connection with the legend.
