History of Pawar Chhatris
The chhatris are memorials to the rulers of Dewas State, a Maratha princely state founded in 1728 by brothers Tukaji Rao Pawar and Jivaji Rao Pawar of the Puar (Pawar) clan who served Peshwa Baji Rao I. Dewas was later divided into Dewas Senior and Dewas Junior, both ruled by the Pawar dynasty until 1948. The cenotaphs commemorate deceased rulers and reflect Maratha funerary architecture traditions.
