History of Pawan Khind
On July 13, 1660, Baji Prabhu Deshpande led 300 Bandal warriors in a rearguard defense of this narrow pass against Siddi Masood's pursuing Bijapur army. This sacrifice allowed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to escape the Siege of Panhala and reach Vishalgad safely. The pass was renamed from Ghod Khind to Pawan Khind (Sacred Pass) to honor the martyrdom of Baji Prabhu and his men who held the position until cannon fire from Vishalgad signaled the King's safety.
