History of Parramatta Park
The area was the Parramatta Government Domain established in 1788 for the colonial government farm and Government House. Old Government House was built from 1799 and served as the country residence of early governors. The Domain was reserved as a public park in 1858, making it one of Australia's oldest public parks. Old Government House and Domain was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010 as part of the Australian Convict Sites.
Culture & Context
The park lies on the traditional lands of the Burramattagal people of the Darug nation, with evidence of long Aboriginal occupation along the Parramatta River. It retains colonial landscape design, historic plantings and monuments reflecting early European settlement, and serves as a major community recreation and events space for Western Sydney.
