History of Pantai Ngliyep
Pantai Ngliyep is one of the earliest beaches developed for tourism in Malang Regency, opened as a managed tourist destination in the early 1950s. Its name is locally linked to the Javanese term 'ngliyep' meaning to doze or be quiet, associated with folklore about the bay's deceptively calm appearance.
Culture & Context
The beach is the site of the annual Labuhan or Larung Sesaji ceremony held in the Javanese month of Ruwah, where offerings are floated into the sea as a traditional expression of gratitude for safety and livelihood. The ritual is a significant local cultural event involving community members and visitors.
