History of Panchmura Terracotta Craft Village
Panchmura's terracotta tradition is linked to the Malla dynasty of Bishnupur (7th to 19th century) which patronized terracotta temple architecture. The Kumbhakar community of Panchmura has preserved hand-made pottery techniques for centuries, with the stylized Bankura Horse evolving as a ritual object and later as a decorative handicraft that received Geographical Indication (GI) status.
Culture & Context
The village is the cultural centre of Bengal's terracotta craft and sustains the Kumbhakar potter community. The Bankura Horse is recognized as a symbol of West Bengal's handicraft heritage, used in folk rituals and as a decorative art form, and is promoted by the state as a flagship rural craft.
