History of Padamsar Lake
Padamsar Lake was constructed in the 15th century (sources cite both 1459 and 1520) by Queen Padmini, daughter of Rao Ganga and granddaughter of Rana Sanga of Mewar. It was built as part of a water conservation system for the desert city of Jodhpur. The lake forms part of an interconnected twin lake system with Ranisar Lake, which was commissioned by Queen Jasmade Hadi, wife of Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur.
Culture & Context
The lakes represent centuries-old tradition of royal women overseeing public water systems in Rajasthan. They demonstrate traditional water management practices in arid regions and remain functional water bodies after more than 500 years.
