About Noopura Gangai
Noopura Gangai is a sacred perennial spring and small waterfall located in the Alagar Hills above the Kallazhagar Temple at Alagar Kovil, about 21 km northeast of Madurai in Tamil Nadu. Revered as holy water believed to originate from the anklet of Lord Vishnu, its water is carried daily for the abhishekam of the temple deity. Set within a forested hill landscape, it is reached by a stepped trek and is notable for its religious importance and natural setting.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a forested hill setting reached by climbing approximately 500 stone steps uphill from the Kallazhagar Temple. At the top, a small perennial spring flows as a cascade into a walled bathing area and collection tank where pilgrims take a ritual dip. The site is surrounded by dense scrub forest of the Alagar Hills with views over the plains. There are no large structures, mainly the spring, rock formations, and simple bathing enclosures. The atmosphere is primarily pilgrimage-focused with devotees collecting holy water.
