History of Nobby Beach
Nobby Beach is named after Nobby Headland, a small rocky outcrop at the southern end of the beach. The area was subdivided for residential development in the 1920s and 1930s as the Gold Coast developed as a seaside holiday destination. The Nobby Beach Surf Life Saving Club was established in 1950 to provide surf patrols for the growing visitor population.
Culture & Context
The beach reflects Gold Coast surf culture and the evolution of the coastline from holiday subdivisions to a contemporary urban beach village. Its foreshore and surf club are community focal points, while the adjacent Nobby Beach precinct is known locally for its cafes, restaurants and boutique shopping that contribute to the suburb's village character.
