About Nilpena Ediacara National Park
Nilpena Ediacara National Park is a protected fossil reserve in the Flinders Ranges of Far North South Australia, about 440 km north of Adelaide. Proclaimed in 2021, it incorporates the former Nilpena pastoral station and Ediacara Conservation Park. The park protects one of the world's most significant Ediacaran fossil beds, dating to about 550 million years ago, with guided tours providing access to preserved ancient seafloor surfaces in an arid outback landscape.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect an arid outback landscape of low ranges, creek beds and gibber plains in the Flinders Ranges. Access to the internationally significant Ediacaran fossil beds is by guided tour only, led by accredited guides. Tours visit protected fossil sites with preserved impressions of soft-bodied organisms on ancient seafloor surfaces, with interpretive commentary. The experience is walking-based on natural uneven ground, with shelter and viewing areas at the fossil sites. Independent self-guided access to fossil beds is not permitted.
