Nga Nam Floating Market

Nga Nam Floating Market is a traditional river market located at the confluence of five canals in Nga Nam Ward, Can Tho City, in the Mekong Delta of southern Vietnam. Established where the Ca Mau, Vinh Quoi, Long My, Thanh Tri and Phung Hiep waterways meet, it is one of the oldest and most authentic floating markets in the region. Vendors trade fresh produce, household goods and breakfast foods directly from boats during early morning hours.

Visitors can expect an early-morning river market where dozens of wooden boats gather at the intersection of five canals. Vendors display fruits, vegetables and goods on tall poles (cay beo) and sell directly from boat to boat. Small sampans serve as mobile food stalls offering noodles, coffee and breakfast. The setting is entirely on water, accessed by hired boat, with views of canal banks, stilt houses and surrounding agricultural landscape.

Formed at the junction of five canals excavated in the early 20th century during the French colonial period to improve water transport in the Mekong Delta. The market developed naturally as a trading hub for surrounding agricultural communities and has operated for over a century as a wholesale and retail centre for river-borne commerce.

Reflects the river-based trading culture of the Mekong Delta and the coexistence of Kinh, Khmer and Hoa communities. The use of cay beo poles to advertise goods and the tradition of living and trading entirely on boats illustrate the distinctive waterborne lifestyle of the region.
