History of Newport Lakes
The site was a bluestone quarry from the 1880s until the late 1960s, supplying basalt for roads, buildings and infrastructure in Melbourne. After quarrying ceased, the pit was used as a landfill. From the 1980s, Hobsons Bay City Council and community groups rehabilitated the degraded site, creating lakes, wetlands and native plantings. The reserve opened as a public park in stages from the 1990s to 2000s as an example of quarry-to-parkland restoration.
Culture & Context
Newport Lakes is a valued community recreation and environmental education space for Hobsons Bay residents. It demonstrates urban ecological restoration and provides a natural open space for passive recreation, nature appreciation and community events within a suburban industrial area.
