History of New Yamuna Bridge
Constructed between 2001 and 2004 by Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) and inaugurated in 2004, the bridge was built to decongest the 1865 Old Yamuna Bridge and improve connectivity between Prayagraj and Naini. It was designed as India's first cable-stayed bridge using a balanced cantilever technique and has since played a crucial role in handling increased traffic during Kumbh Mela and Magh Mela.
Culture & Context
The bridge provides direct access to the Triveni Sangam area, the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati, which is central to religious gatherings like Kumbh Mela and Magh Mela. It has become a modern landmark of Prayagraj and a popular viewpoint for visitors seeking river and Sangam views.
