History of New Tehri Town
New Tehri was constructed in the late 1980s and 1990s by the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation to relocate residents from Old Tehri town, which was submerged during the construction of the Tehri Dam between 2004-2006. Old Tehri was historically the capital of the erstwhile Garhwal kingdom and was situated at the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Bhilangna rivers.
Culture & Context
The region carries cultural heritage from the former Garhwal kingdom. The name Tehri is derived from Trihari, signifying a place that washes away three types of sins. The area maintains traditional Garhwali culture and serves as a center for local religious practices with several temples in the vicinity.
