About Narrandera Fisheries Centre
The Narrandera Fisheries Centre is a NSW Department of Primary Industries inland fisheries research and hatchery on Buckingbong Road, just north of Narrandera in the Riverina region of New South Wales. Established in the early 1960s, it breeds native Murray-Darling Basin fish including Murray cod, trout cod, silver perch and golden perch for conservation stocking. The centre features a public aquarium, interpretive displays and guided tours explaining native fish ecology and hatchery operations.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a working hatchery and visitor centre set among ponds and grounds near Lake Talbot and the Murrumbidgee River. Inside the John Lake Centre, large aquariums display Murray cod, trout cod and other native species, with interpretive panels on fish biology, breeding and river health. Guided tours show hatchery ponds, breeding facilities and fingerling production areas. The site includes outdoor ponds, picnic lawns and a small souvenir area in a quiet semi-rural setting.
