History of Nanjarayan Bird Sanctuary
Nanjarayan Tank was constructed as an irrigation reservoir attributed to local chieftain King Nanjarayan and later restored during the British period. The tank has long supported agriculture in the Tiruppur region. Recognizing its ecological value for avifauna, the Government of Tamil Nadu declared the tank and its environs as Nanjarayan Bird Sanctuary in 2022.
Culture & Context
The tank is a traditional water harvesting and irrigation structure central to agrarian life around Sarkar Periyapalayam and Tiruppur. It reflects the region's historic tank irrigation system and continues to support local farming while serving as a community resource for nature education and bird conservation.
