History of Nakki Lake
Nakki Lake is believed to be one of the first manmade lakes in India. According to legend, it was dug out by gods using their nails (nakki) for protection against a demon. Another legend involves a sculptor named Rasiya Balam who dug the lake to win a king's challenge. Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were immersed in this lake on February 12, 1948, and Gandhi Ghat was constructed at the site.
Culture & Context
The lake is considered sacred by the Garacia tribe of Rajasthan, who use it for worship and remembrance of their ancestors. During the Shukla Paksha festival in April, people consecrate their nails in the lake. The lake also features prominently in local folklore and poetry.
