About Mu Cang Chai Terraced Fields
Mu Cang Chai Terraced Fields are extensive rice terraces in Mu Cang Chai District, Lao Cai Province, northwestern Vietnam, about 280 km from Hanoi. Created over centuries by the H'Mong people on steep mountain slopes, the fields cover around 500 hectares across La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha and De Xu Phinh communes. Designated a National Heritage Site in 2007, they are noted for their layered landscape, seasonal color changes and traditional agricultural system.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect vast layered rice terraces carved into steep mountainsides between 800-1700m elevation, changing color with the seasons from flooded reflective surfaces to green shoots and golden ripe rice. The area includes viewpoints, narrow footpaths between paddies, H'Mong villages with stilt houses, and mountain passes. Exploration is mainly by walking, trekking and motorbike along winding roads with panoramic valley views.
