About Mount Morgan Railway Museum
The Mount Morgan Railway Museum is housed in the former Mount Morgan railway station on Railway Parade in Mount Morgan, about 38 km southwest of Rockhampton, Queensland. The heritage-listed 1898 station preserves the history of the former rack railway that served the Mount Morgan gold and copper mine, once one of the world's largest. It is notable for its collection of railway memorabilia, photographs, rolling stock, signalling equipment and mining-related displays illustrating the town's transport and mining heritage.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a restored heritage railway station building with platform, waiting rooms and exhibition rooms displaying photographs, documents, uniforms, tools, signalling equipment and model railways. Outside on the former tracks and yard are historic carriages, wagons and locomotives. The setting is a quiet small-town streetscape near the Dee River, with volunteer staff often available to explain the rack railway system and the town's mining history. The visit is self-guided with interpretive panels throughout indoor and outdoor areas.
