History of Mount French
Mount French is part of the Moogerah Peaks, formed by volcanic activity about 23 million years ago as part of the Fassifern Valley volcanic remnants. Named by early European settlers, the peak became nationally significant for rock climbing from the late 1960s when Frog Buttress was developed as a major climbing area. The area was gazetted as part of Moogerah Peaks National Park to protect its geological and natural values.
Culture & Context
The Moogerah Peaks area lies within the traditional lands of the Ugarapul people, for whom the peaks and surrounding valleys hold cultural significance. Today Mount French is culturally significant as a long-established recreational and rock-climbing destination within the Scenic Rim, valued for nature-based recreation and landscape appreciation.
