History of Mount Coot-tha Lookout
Mount Coot-tha was originally known as One Tree Hill. It was renamed Mount Coot-tha in 1880, derived from the Indigenous term meaning honey mountain, referring to honey collected from the area. A lookout and kiosk were established in the early 20th century to serve day visitors from Brisbane, with successive upgrades to the viewing platform, cafe and Summit Restaurant. The mountain and reserve have been managed as a public recreation and forest reserve since the late 19th century.
Culture & Context
The Mount Coot-tha area holds significance for the Turrbal and Yuggera peoples as part of their traditional lands. Today it is a major recreational and scenic landmark for Brisbane residents and visitors, valued for its natural bushland setting, city views and role as a community leisure precinct adjacent to the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha.
