History of Mooloolaba Beach
The name Mooloolaba is derived from Aboriginal language, commonly interpreted as place of black snake or snapper fish. The area developed as a seaside resort from the 1920s-1930s, with the Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club established in 1922 and the esplanade progressively developed. Coastal road access and tourism growth from the late 20th century established it as the central beach resort of the Sunshine Coast.
Culture & Context
Located on the traditional lands of the Gubbi Gubbi (Kabi Kabi) people. The beach and foreshore are a central community and recreational gathering place, reflecting Sunshine Coast surf lifesaving culture and coastal lifestyle, and hosting regular community markets and events along the esplanade.
