History of Mitcham Village
Mitcham Village was surveyed and established in 1840-1842 as one of the first planned villages in the Colony of South Australia. It developed around Brown Hill Creek with early stone cottages, a village square (now Mitcham Reserve) and St Michael's Anglican Church built in 1848. The precinct retains many original colonial buildings and is listed as a State Heritage Area, illustrating early colonial settlement, village planning and building techniques in South Australia.
Culture & Context
The village is recognised as a State Heritage Area for its colonial architecture and early settlement character. It serves as a community focal point with Mitcham Reserve used for local events, markets and recreation, and St Michael's Church remains an active parish. The heritage trail and conserved streetscape reflect the cultural identity and history of the City of Mitcham.
