History of Mission to Seafarers
The Victorian Missions to Seamen was established in 1857 to support seafarers visiting the Port of Melbourne. The current building at Flinders Street was constructed in 1916-1917 to designs by architect Walter Butler in Spanish Mission Revival style, funded by public subscription and the Alfred Felton bequest. It includes the chapel, chaplain's residence, administrative quarters and the Norla Dome gymnasium. Listed on the Victorian Heritage Register, it is considered one of the finest examples of its style in Australia and reflects Melbourne's importance as a major port city.

It remains an active seafarers' centre and community cultural venue hosting exhibitions, concerts and events, representing Melbourne's maritime heritage and ongoing connection to global seafaring communities.
