History of Mettur Dam Park
Mettur Dam, also known as Stanley Reservoir, was constructed between 1925 and 1934 across the Cauvery River. It was then the largest dam in India and was named after Sir George Stanley, Governor of Madras. The dam and its associated parks were developed to provide irrigation, hydroelectric power and flood control for Tamil Nadu, and remain a major engineering landmark of the region.
