About Merewether Ocean Baths
Merewether Baths, officially Merewether Ocean Baths, are heritage-listed ocean pools at Merewether Beach in Newcastle, New South Wales. Built in 1935 as a Great Depression relief project, they are the largest ocean baths in the Southern Hemisphere. The complex includes a 100-metre main pool and a smaller children's pool filled with filtered seawater, set against a coastal promenade with views of the Pacific Ocean and adjacent surf beach.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect two large seawater pools set on a concrete promenade directly adjoining Merewether Beach and the Pacific Ocean. The main 100m lap pool and a separate shallow children's wading pool are filled with ocean water. The site includes paved surrounds, change rooms, showers, toilets and a kiosk, with open views of the coastline, surf break and beach. The area is used for lap swimming, wading, sunbathing, walking and photography along the Bathers Way coastal walk.
