History of Melrose
Melrose is the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges, surveyed in 1853 and proclaimed in 1856. A police station was established in 1848 to service the surrounding pastoral district. The town developed around copper mining, pastoralism and as a government centre, retaining many original stone buildings including the police station, courthouse (1859) and Jacka's Brewery (1877). It was the seat of local government and a supply point for travellers heading north into the Flinders Ranges.
Culture & Context
Melrose is located on the traditional lands of the Nukunu people. The town retains significant colonial heritage architecture and is valued as a historic gateway community to the Flinders Ranges, with heritage trails and preserved buildings reflecting 19th-century South Australian settlement. It remains a cultural hub for the District Council of Mount Remarkable and for outdoor recreation culture, particularly mountain biking and bushwalking.
