History of Mathardev Temple
Mathardev Temple is an old hill shrine traditionally revered by local tribal communities of the Satpura region and later adopted as a Hindu Shaivite shrine. The deity is worshipped as Mathardev, regarded as a protector deity of the hills. The temple's hilltop location reflects traditional tribal hill worship practices and its continued importance as a local pilgrimage centre.
Culture & Context
The temple holds religious significance for both tribal communities and Hindu devotees as a form of Lord Shiva. It is a centre for annual fairs and gatherings during Mahashivratri and Navratri, when devotees climb the hill to offer prayers. The site represents the syncretic cultural traditions of the Satpura tribal belt around Sarni and Betul.
