About Masungi Georeserve
Masungi Georeserve is a protected karst conservation area in Baras, Rizal, within the southern Sierra Madre range east of Manila. Managed by the Masungi Georeserve Foundation, it protects limestone formations, tropical forests and watersheds. Notable for its dramatic rock peaks, rope trails and conservation-focused visitor programs, it offers guided Discovery and Legacy Trails that combine low-impact adventure with environmental education and reforestation efforts.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a strictly guided, reservation-only experience on elevated trails through limestone karst peaks, tropical forest and grasslands. The Discovery Trail features rope courses, hanging bridges, nets and viewing decks such as Sapot (cobweb platform) and Duyan (giant hammock) with views of Laguna de Bay and Sierra Madre. The Legacy Trail focuses on reforestation and nursery activities. No unguided wandering; park rangers lead small groups with interpretation stops.

History of Masungi Georeserve
The karst terrain was formed over millions of years. The conservation project began in the mid-1990s when the area, previously degraded by quarrying, logging and slash-and-burn, was placed under protection and reforestation. The Masungi Georeserve Foundation developed low-impact trails to fund and promote watershed conservation and restoration in the southern Sierra Madre.
Culture & Context
The reserve lies within the broader Sierra Madre landscape traditionally associated with Dumagat communities and reflects contemporary Filipino conservation culture focused on watershed protection, reforestation and community-based environmental education.
