History of Marysville
Marysville was established in 1863 as a stopping place on the route to the Woods Point and Upper Goulburn goldfields and was named after Mary Steavenson, wife of Assistant Commissioner of Roads and Bridges James Steavenson. The town developed as a timber and tourism centre in the early 20th century. On 7 February 2009, the Black Saturday bushfires destroyed most of the town, with significant loss of life and buildings; the town has since been rebuilt with new infrastructure and memorials.
