History of Maruti Temple
Construction began in 1931 and was completed by January 1934 after Jano Ram Redkar purchased the land lease from the Portuguese. The original statue was donated by businessman Ramdas Gokuldas Xete Gujir. The temple was redesigned in a modern architectural style by Panjim-based architect Bhaskar Wagle in the 1990s. The first annual zatra was held in 1944 when Portuguese authorities permitted public Hindu events.
Culture & Context
The temple is one of five major temples in Panaji and is the only temple in the city where a zatra is held. Saturday is considered the deity's day with increased devotee visits. During Hanuman Jayanti, lunch is served to visiting devotees. The annual zatra includes a palanquin procession starting from Sri Vithal Rakhumaie Temple and proceeding to Maruti Temple.
