History of Margao Municipal Garden
The garden was historically named Praça Jorge Barreto during the Portuguese era. A portion of the land was donated by His Highness the Aga Khan prior to Goa's liberation, leading to the adjacent children's park being named Aga Khan Park in 1959. The site has served as a central civic landmark opposite the former Camara Municipal de Salcete building for decades.
Culture & Context
The garden functions as a significant social hub and 'green lung' for Margao residents, hosting cultural events and serving as a venue for community interaction. It houses memorial busts of Indian heroes and freedom fighters, reflecting local heritage and civic pride within the urban landscape.
