History of Manapad Beach
Manapad is historically noted for the visit of St. Francis Xavier in 1542 who conducted missionary work along the Fishery Coast. The Holy Cross Church (Church of the Holy Cross) was built in 1581 by Portuguese missionaries to enshrine a relic believed to be a fragment of the True Cross, and has been rebuilt and restored over centuries. The village was an important Portuguese settlement and trading point on the Gulf of Mannar.
Culture & Context
The beach and adjoining Holy Cross Church form an important Christian pilgrimage centre in Tamil Nadu. The annual festival of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross from September 1 to 14 draws large numbers of pilgrims. The local Paravar fishing community maintains traditional fishing practices and cultural traditions linked to the church and coastal life.
