History of Mananchira Square
The Mananchira Tank was constructed in the 14th century by Zamorin Mana Vikrama as a bathing tank and water reservoir for the Zamorin's palace complex. The palace was later lost, but the large rectangular laterite tank remained. In the 1990s the Kozhikode administration redeveloped the surrounding grounds into Mananchira Square, preserving the historic tank as the focal point of the park.
Culture & Context
Mananchira Square is the principal public open space and cultural gathering place in central Kozhikode. It hosts casual leisure, public events and cultural programs and symbolizes the heritage of the Zamorin era, with the historic tank reflecting traditional water architecture of Kerala.
