History of Man Mahal Museum
Man Mahal was built in 1600 by Raja Man Singh, the Kachhwaha ruler of Amber, in Mughal-Rajput style on the banks of the Ganges. In 1737 Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur added an astronomical observatory (Jantar Mantar) on its terrace, one of five built by him in India. The building is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and later developed as a museum by the National Council of Science Museums.
Culture & Context
The palace and observatory reflect Varanasi's long-standing importance as a centre of culture, learning and astronomy. The museum presents the heritage of the Ganges, the ghats and the city's traditions, helping visitors understand the historical and cultural context of Varanasi's riverfront.
