About Mamukala Wetlands
Mamukala Wetlands is a seasonal floodplain wetland within Kakadu National Park in West Arnhem, Northern Territory, Australia. Located off the Arnhem Highway east of Darwin, it is renowned as one of Kakadu's premier birdwatching sites. The wetlands feature a covered bird hide overlooking open water and paperbark swamp. During the late dry season, receding waters concentrate tens of thousands of magpie geese and other waterbirds, making it notable for wildlife viewing and photography.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect an open seasonal wetland and paperbark swamp viewed from a covered bird hide and observation platform. The site is accessed via a short walking track from a car park off the Arnhem Highway. Inside the hide, bench seating and interpretive signage overlook the floodplain where magpie geese, whistling ducks, egrets and other waterbirds congregate, especially as waters recede in the dry season.
