History of Mamleshwar Temple
Mamleshwar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple believed to date back to around the 10th century with later renovations, notably during the 18th century under the Holkar period. It is historically linked with the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga tradition, where the lingam on the south bank is worshipped as Amareshwar and the lingam on the island as Omkareshwar, together representing one Jyotirlinga.
Culture & Context
The temple is culturally significant as one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva, highly revered by Shaivite pilgrims. It is considered essential to visit both Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar (Amareshwar) to complete the Jyotirlinga pilgrimage. The temple is a center for daily worship, festivals such as Maha Shivratri and Shravan month observances, and rituals on the banks of the sacred Narmada River.
