History of Malampuzha Garden
Malampuzha Dam was constructed between 1949 and 1955 across the Malampuzha River, a tributary of the Bharathapuzha, as Kerala's first major irrigation project after independence. The garden was developed as a recreational area adjoining the dam and reservoir. The Yakshi sculpture by renowned artist Kanayi Kunhiraman was installed in 1969 and became a landmark of modern sculpture in Kerala.
Culture & Context
The garden is culturally noted for the Yakshi statue, considered an iconic work of contemporary art in Kerala, and for its innovative Rock Garden. It functions as a major public leisure and family recreation space for Palakkad and is a central part of the Malampuzha tourism complex that combines irrigation heritage with public park culture.
