History of Mala Walk
The walk follows the traditional route of the Mala (rufous hare-wallaby) people, ancestral beings in Anangu Tjukurpa. The area contains rock art and occupation sites reflecting long Aboriginal use of Uluru. Kantju Gorge holds historical and cultural importance as a shelter and water source.
Culture & Context
Mala Walk is a significant living cultural site for Anangu, the traditional owners of Uluru. It interprets the Tjukurpa (law, knowledge and creation stories) of the Mala people who travelled from the north to Uluru. Ranger-guided walks share these stories, rock art and the ongoing connection of Anangu to country. Visitors are asked to respect sensitive sites and cultural protocols.
