History of Mahim Beach
The nearby Mahim Fort has origins dating back to the 13th century when King Pratap Bimb established Mahikavati as his capital. The fort was conquered by the Portuguese in 1534 and strengthened, later falling to the Marathas under Chimaji Appa in 1739 after a significant battle. It remained under Maratha control until 1818 when it was taken by the British. The fort was historically built to defend against Portuguese invasions and played a role in regional trade between Mahim and Kelve.
Culture & Context
The name Mahim is derived from the Goddess Mahikavati, who has a temple in the village. The area maintains a traditional fishing hamlet culture, and visitors are expected to respect local norms as the beach is non-commercial and belongs to the villagers.
