History of Maghar Kabir Chaura
Maghar Kabir Chaura is associated with Sant Kabir (c. 1440-1518), the 15th-century mystic poet. Tradition holds that Kabir, who spent much of his life in Varanasi, came to Maghar and died here in 1518. Legend states that after his death his body turned into flowers, which were divided between Hindu and Muslim followers, leading to the establishment of both a Samadhi and a Mazar side by side.
Culture & Context
The site is a prominent symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity and syncretic tradition in India, revered by both communities. It commemorates Kabir's teachings that transcended religious divisions and emphasized devotion, equality and inner spirituality. Annual observances and gatherings are held here, attracting pilgrims and followers of Kabir Panth.
