About Little Penguin Observation Centre
The Little Penguin Observation Centre is a wildlife viewing facility on the Burnie Foreshore in north-west Tasmania. It protects and interprets a small colony of little penguins (Eudyptula minor) that nest along the coastline near the city centre. Operated seasonally with volunteer guides, the centre provides an elevated viewing platform, interpretive displays and free dusk tours where visitors can observe penguins returning ashore after dark during the breeding season.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a small, open-air observation centre and elevated viewing platform overlooking the foreshore penguin colony near Burnie city centre. During the breeding season, volunteer guides provide free interpretive talks and lead quiet, low-light viewing at dusk as little penguins come ashore and return to burrows. The site includes information displays about penguin biology and conservation, with surrounding coastal parkland, beach and port views. Nocturnal viewing is weather-dependent and conducted in darkness without flash.
